End Game- Part 1
“Heroes know that things must happen when it is time for them to happen. A quest may not simply be abandoned; unicorns may go unrescued for a long time, but not forever; a happy ending cannot come in the middle of the story.”
He could feel a trickle run down the side of his mouth. Was it blood? He did not know. He could not move his hand to touch it. He could feel the sun beating down hot on his face. It warmed a chill he could vaguely feel all over. He could not open his eyes. Was it summer already? He did not know. He had a sensation of floating. His thoughts drifted. Where was he?
“Gillis 3, I have found a new land. Follow me there. It has riches like none seen before. Not many know of it. We can do well there together, I am sure of it!” MageAbel, as he wished to be called now, had told him. And so the Rogue Warriors gave up their interplanetary raids and landed on this primitive soil.
When he entered the town of Byrendell, it was nearly deserted. The innkeeper was not much help and did not seem to know anything about the town at all; his laconic replies were not overly informative.
He discovered to his embarrassment that he was naked save for a small crude packsack. He found 100 gold pieces therein and it seemed a small fortune to him. Holding the pack modestly in front he entered the shop and purchased from the shopkeeper a nice looking leather tunic, leggings and boots. He also found a battered but usable wooden shield and a shining short sword.
He counted his gold. Exactly 7 gold pieces left. He tucked it into his pack. He had never wielded a sword. He determined that he should learn. He went into the world and practiced on the rats he found in nearby fields. They were surprisingly fierce and their bites left a few gushing wounds. To his delight he learned that the shop keeper would accept their pelts for gold. He tucked his few coins in his pack.
He soon encountered goblins. They were like nothing he had ever seen before. Crafty and sneaky, they landed him some terrible blows and their arrows narrowly missed killing him on more than one occasion. He began to purchase healing medicines from the shopkeeper. He soon became adept at battling these wily humanoids. He was beginning to accumulate gold and gear. And he was getting stronger. He joined a clan and together they fought against the many creatures and monsters inhabiting this foreign land.
He and some of the other warriors decided to explore a mysterious cave far to the east. Once inside they began a long and treacherous trek into the dungeons and mazes that were carefully arranged by the clever goblins to fool potential enemies. Finally after days of travel and many small battles they came upon the lair of the Goblin King. They fought the battle of their lives and were rewarded t with gold and weapons and new armour. They returned to the surface triumphant .
At the pub in Cloven Pines they celebrated with steins of beer and lots of camaraderie. A man he did not know had been watching them at a nearby table. He drew himself up and came over to them and raised his stein. “ I could not help but hear you speak of your adventures. Do you think you have what it takes to travel into the caves at Pepper Mountain? “
It was a challenge. And G_3 as he was now known, was ready for a challenge. “I have fought with the Orcs before. I do not fear them. Let’s take them on friend! What do they call you?”
“Raven.”
“Raiven!” Where was that girl? Why wasn’t she here? She was always so headstrong that one. Seemed like he was always surrounded by headstrong women.
He struggled to open his eyes but he did not have the strength. He was too sleepy, too warm. The floating motion was comforting and the slight breeze gave him a feeling of contentment he had not felt for years. It was as if he was in a hammock on a warm summer day, blissfully suspended between sleep and waking. He tried to clear his mind. The throbbing in his head was making it hard to remember. "Raiven, I need my sword, why can't I feel it at my side.?"
“ Well, Raven, my friend,” G_3 put his arm around his back, “Let’s go find ourselves an Orc King!“ As he checked his hilt for his sword, he swayed a little off balance from the ale. He was smiling from ear to ear.
“Good friend, meet me first thing in the morning and we shall venture there. I fear you have had a bit too much celebration for the night .”
